Midis Group sponsor Maxime Chaya’s plan to summit Tibetan peak on skis
Midis Group have agreed to be first sponsor of Lebanese national champion Maxime Chaya’s next amazing adventure which is to summit – on skis – the immense northern Tibetan peak, Mustagh Ata.
At 7509 metres, the peak is one of the biggest features forming the northerly edge of the Tibetan Plateau. In the Uyghur language, Mustagh Ata literally means “ice-mountain-father.” It was formerly known as Mount Tagharma or Taghalma.
Given its extreme altitude and northern latitude, the severe cold and the unpredictable weather make Mustagh Ata a serious challenge for even the most experienced of climbers.
Midis Group’s long involvement with Lebanon’s favourite adventurer recently included sponsorship of the successful Ultra Trail Des Cedres. The Ultra Trail has now been included in the regular circuit of ultra trail events worldwide and Maxime has begun planning next year’s UTC and the biennial winter event, the Patrouille des Cedres.
“Midis Group continue to be inspired by the energy, ambition and successes of our national champion, Maxime Chaya. These are the qualities we hope we show, ourselves, and we wish Maxime every success in this next adventure,” said Katia Harfouche from Midis Group.
Maxime left on August 3 for China’s northwest province of Xinjiang, to begin the challenge. If the attempt in August succeeds, he’ll be the first person from our region to summit a 7500m peak on skis.
Base Camp will be set up at the foot of the mountain at an altitude of 4,450m. Before that, to get to the mountain, Maxime faces a long voyage involving multiple flights to Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan, driving overland in 4x4s to Kashgar in Xinjiang Province, China and then trekking alongside camels to Base Camp.
